Description:

For this swap, you will create a piece of mail art for your partner where you have included the following bits and pieces.

  • a face (not necessarily human)

  • something reflecting weights and measures (metric or standard)

  • a number or numbers

  • a quote

  • the colour blue

  • a geometric shape (square, circle, triangle, etc)

  • a inked stamp from a source other than an actual rubber stamp (see below)

  • a used postage stamp (not the one you use to mail the art)

This mail art will be in the form of an envelope or postcard. You may use any medium for each component of the mail art. You may draw or paint the whole piece or just one part and use different mediums for the rest. Each component of the piece must be separate. In other words, a hand drawn ruler may be the weights and measures component OR the number components but not both. Your completed artwork may contain additional components to those listed above but must contain AT LEAST the 8 listed above. Stickers are allowed but only in moderation.

**Ideas for uses for stamped images include corrugated cardboard, caps and lids off various bottles and jars, piece of rough fabric, sponge, wadded up paper towel, etc. Virtually anything that may make a interesting impression.

If there is enough interest, I will make this a regular challenge changing the requirements slightly for each swap.

Have fun!! Any questions, feel free to ask!

Newbies are welcome but please search google for an idea as to what mail art should look like if your not sure and don't be afraid to ask questions! :)

The envelope or postcard we decorate is the one we put postage on and mail, correct? Or do we leave them unused for our partner to use? (Is this a stupid question... I am assuming it's the first since we want our mail arty anyway :) )

What should go inside the envie? A letter? A note?

SFreer 01/14/2013 #

HI Yes the envelope or postcard should be addressed and mailed to your partner. If you choose to make and mail an envelope, you could put a note, notecard or whatever you choose inside or nothing at all. The point of the swap is more the mail art itself but of course, if you decide to send a flat extra that is completely ok.. If your envelope is empty, perhaps put the word empty on the envelope back so that your partner doesn't open it... :)

eager to do this one! but a little confused about the "inked stamp from a source other than an actual rubber stamp"... please explain a little more. thanks!!

MissThundercat 01/17/2013 #

@happyDayMail I think what's meant here is that you use something else than an actual rubber stamp, as a rubber stamp. for instance stamp with a wine cork, clothspin, thredspool, a button etc... something that would make an imprint when inked :)

thanks MissThundercat! My thinking was obviously "inside the box" and I should have gone OUTSIDE :>

SFreer 01/22/2013 #

thank you @MissThundercat for explaining that .. that is exactly what I mean.. :) a cork would make an excellent stamp. So would a small sponge, a piece of textured fabric, a bottle cap, a wadded up pieces of tissue, bubble wrap, etc. Pretty much anything textured.

I hope this becomes a series.

@wolfeagle I was thinking that myself actually.. consider this #1! :)
