TPS: Monochromatic - Blue

Quick question - when I think of a monochromatic blue card I think of a print that might have white, medium blues, then maybe into very dark blues. Is that what you have in mind? Basically taking a base blue -- adding white (to tint) or black (to shade) and then allowing all those different blues.

Or are you talking just a blue ink on blue or white card stock and then all textures coming from that one base color?

Clear as mud? I might actually have time to join in this series and I want to make sure I have the right process in mind.

I've actually been trying to decide if light blues, medium blues, etc. would be the way to go, and I'm thinking yeah, as long as the base color is blue, feel free to tint and shade as you'd like.

On the red monocromatic swap, I did everything different shades of red. I was pleased with the result. : )

I wish I'd done that on the red, Paige. My prints were ok, but could have been improved on with lighter and darker tones of red.

I really struggled with the red as there didn't seem to be much of a change in the color so the prints didn't come out with much of the "pattern". I tried layers with the different reds and it wasn't successful.

Will someone who was successful/happy/pleased with their red version please share their secret with this newbie? The video's I have watched make it look so easy yet when I did what I thought was the same thing it was not! What brand/types of paints are acceptable?

Judy, I struggled with the red, too. I think the key for me is going to be using lighter and darker tones of the color to get some variation. As for paints, I had the best luck with paints that were a bit thicker. Really watered-down craft paints just don't seem to be cutting it for me as much, even with other printing techniques. Anymore, I've moved to mostly using Liquitex Basics.

I'd love to hear any tips anyone else can share for these swaps!

Sometimes you can get different shades of the same exact color by going over different shades of paper and incorporating them together. I mean Light Blue #10 shade would give you a different result on white cardstock as it would on a dark blue cardstock, but you the same "Monocromatic effect" would be the result. Does this make sense, or does everyone need to come over to my house and compare how we do everything?

is there a specific blue we are supposed to use?

For this swap, just regular ol' blue, or something very close to it. As long as your blue doesn't venture into aqua or indigo territory, for instance, then it's all good.

@trollop Aqua is my favorite, too, and indigo is wonderful! I'm thinking of doing future swaps with those colors specifically, as well as variations on other colors.
