Description:

International swap, open to newbies, who have a delightfully filled out profile!

Did you know?

If you crumple up a brown paper bag, spray it with water, and then iron it, it will look like leather? And if you do it several times, it becomes as pliable and wrinkly as the real stuff!

I know, we already have "pleather" -- that fake combo of leather and plastic...

So, what would we call THIS? "BEATHER!" Because it's lots cheaper, and yes, BEATHER than the other fake stuff, because you make it yourself!

What an awfully great idea!

DETAILS: You will have TWO partners. (For you newbies, that means you'll get TWO ratings!)

Make TWO ATCs, profound little things, by using only "BEATHER!", mounted on a stiff backing, (a cut-up cereal box works great!) then send ONE of them to each of your swap partners.

Attach your BEATHER to the backing, and decorate from there, to your heart's delight! You can color pieces, to use on your ATC, but let's not be critical with what your swap partner creates and sends you. This might be a brand new craft for that person, and the MOST important part of this swap, is that it be FUN!

(And It's just possible, that we've invented a new word!!)

Decorating the ATC can be using whatever technique you choose, hopefully with smaller pieces of BEATHER! This is completely Sender's choice!

Three weeks until swap closes, then another three weeks to send them.

And most important, have FUN with them.

Also,, please do not try to pass them off as genuine leather! I assume NO responsibility! 😀

Any questions or comments, please just ask me or message me.

By 'using only "BEATHER!"' does that mean we should not put it on a stiff backing? I've made this stuff before, and it can end up with all the sturdiness of an overcooked piece of lasagna.

No, it will still need the heavier backing. Thank you so much for bringing that up, I'm going to change the swap rules, to include that!

I found some tutorials online that call for using glue (like watered down Elmer's or mod podge). Then you can heat emboss and ink the paper if you want. I'm going to try this and see. Maybe I didn't iron the paper bags enough or wrinkle them up enough first??😛

Thank you so much, for going in search of a crafting technique, so that we can all improve our crafting! As to whether the glue or Mod Podge actually works, I cannot say.

As with all swaps that I host, this one is completely judgement-free, and hopefully, gives us a chance to practice a new technique, that others can experiment with and hopefully have a lot of FUN with!

Happy Swapping!

Okay! I think I've got the hang of it.😃 My worry was that I couldn't get the hang of the technique described in the swap and they would be rated poorly.😛 I'm going to be brave and join the swap!

We can use other embellishments besides beather, right?

gramsbuttonbox 09/ 2/2015 #

Radical, I'm so happy you are letting your bravery shine thru! All of my swaps are judgement-free, most are sender's choice. The most important part, is to have FUN!

And yes, this may be a new crafting technique to some swappers, and that's a very good thing!

gramsbuttonbox 09/ 2/2015 #

Meba, you can, just be sure that it's clearly made of BEATHER, and yeah, even some of the embellishments, if you can swing it! Have FUN!

I'm having trouble sewing on my beather, both by machine and by hand; I have tried different sizes of needles and threads. But whatever I try, the beather rips. Has anyone had any success with sewing with it? And if so what am I doing wrong? Thanks :)

Hi, I have tried hand stitching, but found I had to put a "liner" either between two layers or underneath...of fabric...

This really IS an experimental craft...so that would be allowable...and If anyone has come up I with a better/different method, please let us know...

Thanks Mary that's really helpful.
