Vocabulary Postcard Swap #4

I love words and I love postcards, so I thought I would join the two in a fun swap. Will you join me in an adventure? Perhaps you will learn a new word or two or, if you know the words already, it will give you a chance to use one of them by sending a postcard that you think reflects the meaning of one of the words.

The way this swap works is as follows:

  1. I have listed below five words that one does not typically hear used in every day conversation. Also provided is the definition of the word, several synonyms (a synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same thing), and an example of how the word is used within a sentence.

  2. You will pick one postcard from your collection that you think reflects one of the words, the meaning of the selected word, or some aspect of what the word means. Your interpretation can be creative, but you need to be able to explain it (see next instruction).

  3. On the back of the card you need to identify yourself, the name of the swap, the word your card is supposed to represent, and why you think your card fits your chosen word.

  4. Address the postcard and send it to your partner.

  5. When you receive a postcard from the partner you were assigned to, please be open to the sender’s interpretation, even if you think it might seem a little far-fetched. This swap isn’t about receiving items that match our own interpretations, but in discovering how someone else interprets the same thing. Do not rate someone down because you don’t care for the card or the sender’s interpretation, if they have otherwise met the swap requirements.

  6. The postcard you send should be in good condition, barring what might happen to it in transit.

  7. You must have a rating of at least 4.97 to play and no recent unexplained ratings of 3 or 1.

Here are the words from which you will choose one:

bambino - A young child.
Synonyms: toddler, yearling, tot, babe, infant, tyke
Usage: Up on the hill, Aunt Joan sat with my new cousin on a picnic blanket, cradling the little bambino in her arms.

functionary - A worker who holds or is invested with an office.
Synonyms: official, deputy, minister, officer, representative, worker
Usage: The functionary next in consequence to the agent was the blacksmith, a most important, and, indeed, indispensable personage in a frontier community.

bestir - To cause to become active.
Synonyms: rouse, flit, scurry, dash, hasten, scamper
Usage: If nobody knows the address, you must still bestir yourself in trying to find it.

dolorous - Marked by or exhibiting sorrow, grief, or pain.
Synonyms: lachrymose, weeping, tearful, afflicted, dire, distressing, doleful
Usage: She always speaks with a wailing, dolorous voice—you are nervously expecting her to burst into tears every moment.

debonair - Having a sophisticated charm.
Synonyms: suave, dashing, affable, urbane, courteous, sprightly
Usage: Like other girls she had her dreams of a possible Prince Charming, young and handsome and debonair.

I hope you will join me in this swap and that it will be fun.

Cynthia
