Did any of you know that March 28th is National Something On a Stick Day? Well yes it is.

National Something on a Stick Day gives you the opportunity to .... you guessed it......eat something on a stick!

Everything you need to know about National Something On A Stick Day can be found in its name. It’s a holiday in which people are supposed to enjoy their favorite stick-anchored foods. This can mean corn dogs, freezer pops, steak kabobs, club sandwich skewers, or anything else that you can eat off of a stick. It’s a sort of a niche holiday, but it is one that’s being celebrated by more and more people as the years go by. If you’re looking to observe this holiday, then all you need is to eat some food on a stick on March 28th.

Unfortunately, we were unable to uncover the history of National Something On A Stick Day, but it was probably started by one of the major food companies that make freezer pops or corn dogs. Or maybe it was invented by someone on the Internet who wanted to honor these foods.

Although humans have probably placed foods on sticks for thousands of years, some of the more popular foods on sticks haven’t been around all that long. Take the kebab for instance. The first written instance of this food was in 1377 in Turkey. These roasted meat kebabs quickly spread across the Ottoman Empire and before you know it it was enjoyed all across Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Jumping forward several hundred years brings us to the invention of the Popsicle. The Popsicle was invented by eleven-year-old Frank Epperson in 1905. In 1924, he patented it as a drink on a stick. Although it got off to a slow start, its popularity increased dramatically during the Great Depression as people found them to be an affordable snack.

Twenty-five years later, the corn dog would hit the scene in 1929. German immigrants in Texas first introduced sausages on sticks but it wouldn’t be until Stanley S. Jenkins patented this snack food that it would find its market. Now millions of corn dogs are sold every year. Even though just about any food solid enough to be placed on a stick can be placed on a stick, there are some foods that have been traditionally stick-based foods for quite some time.

Below is a list of the foods that have been put on sticks and sold at the grocery store or the local State Fair.

As we said, celebrating this holiday is as simple as enjoying one of your favorite foods on a stick. It can also be a day on which you can put new foods on a stick. Regardless of how you’re celebrating it, just make sure that you post on social media using the hashtag #NationalSomethingOnAStickDay to let everyone know what you’re doing for the day.
