Description:

It begins!!! I have been so excited about starting this Quilt Block of The Month!! I have found some really nice blocks that I think will make a beautiful quilt by the time we are finished.

For this swap we will have two partners and we will make each partner a 12 x 12 inch quilt block with the pattern for this month.

This month's pattern is the Bright Hopes pattern.

Please check out This Link for the steps on what you need to do. It's a very simple pattern and I think a very pretty one.

Since this is a September QBOTM, we will use bright vivid blues, to honor the September birthstone which is sapphire. No solids are to be used except for the very center square. You can have that be a solid to tie in all the other fabrics. It doesn't have to be solid, but it can be. The fabric needs to have mostly blue, but it can have other colors in it.

If you join the QBOTM, you don't have to stay in it for each round. It's not a requirement that you join each month, but I am excited about getting a whole quilt's worth of squares from my favorite swapping pals!!!

Make sure the fabrics are all 100% cotton fabrics and are 12x12 finished or 12 1/2 by 12 1/2.

Any questions, be sure to pm me and I'll be happy to answer them!

UPDATES 08/20/09

  • Do not do the partial seams portion of the pattern. Do the seams as usual when quilting.

  • When possible, use quilt quality fabric, not just 100% cotton. This way these are higher end squares to make a really beautiful quilt at the end of the year.

  • Please, also have the lightest fabric be the center square. I think this makes the square really interesting and make the blues really vibrant.

If you have already completed your square, please don't fret, you can go ahead and send it. Just leave a note for your partner that you had finished it before these updates.

Any other questions, please let me know!!

I assume that all blocks are to be 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 when we send them. (12 by 12 - finished size - plus 1/4" seam allowance)

I just want to be sure!

crochetjunkie 08/12/2009 #

yes, thanks for clarifying!

Craftlover10101 08/15/2009 #

Oh this scares me. I don't know I'll have to try and make one before joining. I am definately below beginner on this.

Craftlover10101 08/15/2009 #

hahaha sorry thought this was a different pattern. lol ok I might be able to wing this one

BusyB 08/15/2009 #

Craftlover10101, I know you can do this one! Simple pieces and besides I have confidence in you. :)

mlookyloo1 08/15/2009 #

will you put a new pattern out each month

crochetjunkie 08/15/2009 #

@craftlover10101 I'm sure you can do it! Very simple and fast! That's why I chose it as a first one, to help the beginners not feel too overwhelmed!! I'm no expert at quilt blocks, so i am still learning too! I only chose blocks that I feel I would be able to make with relatively low complications~!

@mlookyloo1 yes, different patterns for each month! no two months will have the same pattern. neat idea huh!

I will keep an eye out for US swaps.. due to some financial changes I cant afford to ship outside the US :( Sounds fun though

I made these up today. As long as you can sew a straight line, and remember to press your seams as you go along, you will be successful. It's really an easy block.

chimerix 08/19/2009 #

I got mine made today. so much fun.

crochetjunkie 08/19/2009 #

i was going to suggest not doing the partial seems that they suggest in the pattern. that is for a more experienced quilter and is confusing even to me, someone a bit above a beginner.

I'm gla dyou liked it @TC

Crochetjunkie, it would be very difficult to make this block without using the partial seams. Really, only the first line of stitching has a partial seam. The rest of the pieces are sewn on completely from raw edge to raw edge. After all the pieces are attached, you finish sewing that first partial seam. You might try a sample block; it really is easy.

Thank you ladies, lol, I'm pretty sure I can handle this one. lol I thought it was a house. I had looked into a different group swap with a house for a pattern and that was just WAYYYYY too confusing for me lol.

:-))))

crochetjunkie 08/22/2009 #

well the partial seam is up to the maker. i'm not going to require soemthing on a swap that I don't feel comfortable doing myself. so it's at your discretion, as long as it looks right!!! lol

This was so much FUN. I can not wait for the next

I would suggest pre-washing the fabric if it is for a bed quilt. Would hate to have it bleed or even have some blocks pre-washed & some not pre-washed and then some blocks shrink & then have different size blocks when it is washed.

What do you think? I always pre-wash my quilt fabric, but not necessarily if it is a wall hanging.

Craftlover10101 09/13/2009 #

The majority of my fabric is already washed. I hope this is okay?
Egads I never thought to ask that. But they've only been through the wash on cold cycle and liquid soap just enough that it takes that horrible smell from the factory out. I never use fabric softner in the washer or the dryer when I do my fabric. Because some have allergies.

Craftlover10101 09/18/2009 #

Mine are ready, I will probably be mailing them out wed. next week.

Craftlover10101 09/24/2009 #

Mine are on their way. My youngest is sick and I didn't get them out yesterday like I thought I would. But still ontime lol. I sure hope they are alright and that my partners like them.
