Description:

I had such a great time making my first matchbox I thought I would like to host my own matchbox swap. This swap is to decorate and fill a 32-count (50 count in Australia) matchbox using the theme of flowers. Note Australian matchboxes are apparently 1 cm smaller than those from the US, I hope no-one minds that :)

Fill the box with things like buttons, ribbon, beads, brads, tiny pictures, etc. Anything is possible as long as it fits in the box and suits the theme.

This swap is international and open to swappers with ratings of 4 or higher. Your profile must be filled out.

Please spend some time decorating the matchbox and send things you would like to get yourself.

Im in Australia too (melbourne). Today I found the perfect size matchboxes, I haven't seen these before, not too small not too big. They are 100 count and the box measures 7cm x5.2cm x 2.5cm. They were $1.95 for 3 packets at Ritchies IGA if anyone is interested. :)

Thanks for that Grobanite, I shall look around. I have discovered that I can fit an amazing amount of stuff into an ordinary 5cm x 4cm x 1cm matchbox so bigger boxes make the possibilities endless :)

I'm from Adelaide! Where did you live when you were here?

Thanks so much everyone for joining my first ever swap hosting. I was so enthused after making my first filled box for the "newbie matchbox swap" that I made another but I had nowhere to send it. Thus I came up with the idea for my very own swap. Of course, I now keep finding more flower things to stick in the box only it's already fully stuffed! I may have to host another :)

Hi magicjessnrach, I grew up in Hectorville and lived in the eastern suburbs all my life there. I was living at Wynn Vale before I came to Melbourne. I live in almost the same type of area here, the hills are just a little further away but it feels right to have them as a backdrop. I visit Adelaide quite often to visit family. Coincidently 2 of my neices there are called 'jess and rach' :) BTW I also saw those larger matchboxes at Safeway (woolworths). Good luck with hosting the swap, LUV those matchboxes!

Hi Grobanite, I teach in the Eastern Suburbs but live down South. Great place to teach, nice place to live. Jess is one of my daughters, magic (maddy) is another, I am the Rach :)

This is my first matchbox venture. Are there any places that might give some hints that would be helpful. Like: How do most people cover them? Do you cover the striking part too? How do you mail them safely? I am very excited about doing this!

Hi Marigold, I have never received a matchbox so I can only tell you what I have done. I'm guessing that what I have made is ok :) So far I have covered and filled 4 boxes. On my first I covered only the outside and lined the inside with coloured paper. I have since found I can cover every surface with paper and the box will still close. One of the boxes I covered in fabric. I mailed them in bubble lined envelopes. This has meant that I have had to send them at parcel rate rather than letter rate which costs a bit more. You can see pictures of some of my boxes on my flickr account. I'm glad you're excited!
