Knitting socks is fun =)

I reaaally want to learn how to knit, and I just got a new book about knitting, so I'm going to practice and hopefully I can knit socks by the sign up deadline. I've always been good at crochet but never could get the knack of knitting.

i wish i could knit :(

It took me a year to make a pair of socks! That's coz I kept losing interest. Won't be joining though, just in case!

I love to knit socks :) I use size 36 in europe and I think it`s size 6 in Us size.

My size is 81/2-9 in US

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good beginner knitted sock pattern??- I can crochet socks, but havent tried knitted ones yet ,,,,just learning to knit... would love to join in

@mumbles17 you might be able to find some at the lionbrandyarn.com. I have a really nice book of sock patterns published by Lion Brand Yarn, but there might be some easy sock patterns on in there free pattern section on their website. I'm not completly sure - I haven't looked for sock patterns for awhile.

@mumbles17 beginners often have problems with knitting the heel of the sock. If you want to start with an easy sock, you could try one "without heel" ;) See a pattern here: http://www.suite101.com/content/spiral-socks-without-heels-a14568 They look like spirals later and fit easily to the foot. I am a sock knitter and I do have an easy pattern that I used when I started out. I think cheap yarn is harder to knit with. So just ask me about the pattern and I will send it.

I think I might join, watching for now. Am an avid sock knitter. I'm working on a pair in Kaffe Fassett wool right now. Fantastic colors!

I wouldn't recommend that someone who's totally new at knitting join this. Reasons? 1. when you're new at knitting your tension changes, and with the same pattern you might end up with two socks of a very different size (I like my socks the same size), 2. knitting in the round, whether on double pointed or round needles requires some practice, and I really wouldn't like to receive socks with a seam in them... 3. shaping the heel requires some practice, and I don't like the heelless type of socks. 4. you really want good quality yarn, especially when knitting socks. It's much easier and more pleasant to work with and more comfortable and durable, but first-time knitters often tend to go with cheaper yarns 'to practice'. Please don't! If you start of with cheap yarn, you end up with a cheap project.

So my advice: knit up a pair for yourself first (with good yarn, the plus side of socks as a first project is that you don't need a lot of yarn for your finished project). Wear and wash them a few times. If what your left with is something you'd still like to receive in a swap: join!

Alternatively: host a scarf knitting swap! Everyone picks a beautiful (fantasy) yarn in a color their partner likes and knits a rectangle of 25cm by 150 cm. Good practice, good fun and a beautiful scarf to boost! (maybe I'll host this swap some day, never hosted one before...)

@Saartja I totally agree with you! The swap is suposed to be for knitters who knitted some socks before and can complete a pair of socks in under 6 weeks! If you're not that experienced in knitting socks yet: if this swap goes well I'll definetely make another one with knitting socks ;)

I would love to join this sock swap but I have been flaked on so many times , I am really not sure. I haven't swaped in a while.

I totally agree with Saartje. I have been knitting scarves and hats for years now and have just started my first pair of socks... I am SO THRILLED!! But I would never send these out to anyone as I'm still trying to get my tension right, etc. Thanks for a fantastic swap but I won't be joining this one until I can perfect my socks. Shoe size is 7.5 US

ATTENTION: Please be careful with converting your shoe size. That doesn't seem to be as easy as I imagined, I just leaned that there are different shoe sizes for male and woman in the US... ;) Didn't know that. But I assume that we are all female here so we are all writing the female size... ^^

My size is 40 (europe) or 9 (US-female-size).

As a tip: it's easier to fit handknit socks if, instead of providing your shoe size, you provide the measurement of your foot length (heel to toe, measured flat against the ground) and the ball of your foot at its widest spot.

In general, an experienced knitter can make a pair of well-fitting socks using those two measurements.

US shoe size isn't sufficient, as shoes have more ease than socks, and individual shoe forms vary too much to be useful in the width measurement. Measurements also avoid the issue of US vs. non-US sizing methods.

I'm a woman's 8 1/2 - 9 in US sizes

I have measured my foot it is 101/2 long and 4 inches wide at the ball I wear an 81/2 or 9 shoe. hope this helps my partner.

I was watching but time got away from me. I've knitted for years but never made socks. I wanted to make a pair for me or my daughter first. I hope you host another one soon.
